MAIN STREET COMMITTEES (May 2006)

Fund-Raising Committee:

The Fund-Raising group is in charge of gathering local funds to support the MSP. Many of our grant donors required either matching fundraised amounts or a fundraising quota. Donors often require this to see if a project is economically viable and thriving. Trumansburg residents showed their committment to the MSP by helping fundraise over $100,000! This money helped get us the critical TEA-21 grant. In the past, the Fundraising committee managed the sale of commemarative bricks and sidewalk bluestones, while also designing community events like "Corn on the Curb." As the MSP heads into the summer months and becomes more active expect to see lots more activity from the fundraising community.

To attend the next meeting or to volunteer for an event please contact Fran Maguire at 387-6111.

Evaluation Committee:

This committee is an important component of the Main Street Project. Participatory, ongoing research has allowed the volunteers to revise MSP goals based on continuous feedback from area residents. The committee designs and administers surveys to collect information and to translate that into realistic goals and plans. Examples of the usefulness of this type of research include the youth “Clean Up Main Street” event and the numerous revisions made to the Old Main turnaround.

To become a part of this group please contact Annalisa Raymer at255-6074 or alr26@cornell.edu

Bus Stop Committee:

The Main Street Project has received a financial commitment from Tompkins County Area Transit toward improving the appearance of the local bus stops. TCAT is encouraging the Village to make the bus stops more unique and attractive while working within TCAT specifications. Better bus stops encourage less cars on the road which makes Trumansburg pedestrian friendly, but also environmentally sustainable. To learn more about this project or to attend the next scheduled meeting contact Don Schlather at 387-5668.

Commemorative Booklet:

Main Street Project volunteers are interested in compiling a Commemorative Booklet about  Main  Street, Trumansburg as it enters the 21st century.   Volunteers are currently gathering information and photos (old and new) and hope to start outlining and composing the booklet sometime soon. An example  of this committee's activities, and the impact that they have,  was the Youth Essay  Contest held last winter. The Ulysses Historical Society will be including copies of the winning essays in a time capsule of local history that they are currently putting together. If you have things to  contribute, or if you are interested in helping with this  project,  please call the Community Development Coordinator at 387-4471. Expect to see new activity from this group as construction begins!

Youth Projects:

The Main Street Project is always looking for new ways to get youth and families involved in the Project.

Several ways that youth have already been involved in the Project include: a High School Soccer Team volunteering at "Corn on the Curb" as part of their community service committment, the 4-H group entering a wagon in the Festival of Flowers wagon decorating contest, the Kids Clean Up Main Street for Earth Day walk, and the Fourth Grade Architecture Project being a part of the Design Community Meeting as well as the Community Development Society's workshop in Trumansburg

As construction begins, the MSP looks to Trumansburg youth to remain involved. They will inherit Main Street's future and, hence, should be a part of its present. If you have any ideas for getting youth involved in the MSP or have a youth group that wants to help then contact the Community Development Coordinator at 387-4471.
